Sunday Quote….Family

My own personal quote today……..

I always thought a home makes a family…….but your home is wherever your family is! And no matter near and far, when we are together that is where our home will be!

Shark Attack

Last Summer while away for work, I had a lot of free time to myself so I watched a lot of movies.

For some reason I decided to watch back to back shark movies!

The Reef and Soul Surfer

I grew up watching the mother of all shark movies, Jaws! It never made me afraid and I never saw it as a real threat. But I loved the music.

And of course I’ve seen Dark Water, very scary because it was based on a true story and was truly horrifying.

Soul Surfer was scary only during the attack. The main character is surfing peacefully when out of nowhere comes a giant shark and takes her arm off.

Then it was sad….

but it was a great story about the power of determination and perseverance. Anna Sophia Robb was amazing in this film. It was also based on a true story, which makes it even more amazing to me.

The Reef was just scary. A group of friends set out to a reef when something happens to their boat. Now they are in the water and fighting for their lives. I don’t want to give too much away but you can imagine what happens next.

I spent the week in Cape Cod immediately after watching these movies….big mistake.

Every time I’d get in the water, I was freaking out about sharks.

It was funny because despite growing up in Puerto Rico and swimming in the ocean my whole life without a ounce of fear, now I was totally petrified.

We hiked through the dunes on the National Seashore side of Cape Cod to a beautiful isolated stretch of Atlantic ocean, it was stunning!

And all I kept thinking was SHARK!

I couldn’t help but laugh at myself!

Since, I continue to torture myself.

I watched a couple more shark movies this Summer.

Shark Night and more recently Dark Tide.

Shark Night was set in a lake house in Louisiana with my favorite horror movie girl, Sara Paxton as the lead character. Check her out in the remake of Last House on the Left, amazing!

It has more to do with scary hick ex boyfriends than scary sharks but we still see a lot of underwater action.

And Dark Tide is a fairly new with Halle Berry as the lead. It was different, and suspenseful. It follows Berry, as an expert Shark diver taking a well paying tourist shark diving. Overall a good shark movie.

And as I’m getting ready for vacation again, I’m thinking SHARKS, lol!

There have been shark sightings in Cape Cod this summer and one was actually caught following a kayaker recently, yikes!

The fear of sharks is very real but I wanted to find out the odds for myself, here’s what I found:

Your chances of being attacked by a shark are just one in 11.5 million, according to the University of Florida’s International Shark Attack File.

On average, there are about 65 shark attacks worldwide each year; a handful are fatal. You are more likely to be killed by a dog, snake or in a car collision with a deer. You’re also 30 times more likely to be killed by lightning and three times more likely to drown at the beach than die from a shark attack, according to ISAF.

Still, I think I’ll be swimming near the shore this summer, just to be safe!
